Basic Homemade Almond Milk

Ojas is built by nurturing all the tissues skillfully. This drink does this well.

Time: overnight

Makes: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 8-10 raw almonds soaked in 2 cups of water with

  • ½ tsp mineral salt.

  • cup of fresh water.

Soak the almond and salt overnight in 2 cups of water. Pinch their noses to peel them, and discard the soaking water. Blend the almonds with a fresh cup of water. If you have a vitamix or other such wonder, this becomes beautiful creamy and completely integrates the almonds into the liquid. If you have a blender you’ll have a few chunks of nuts to chew or strain out.

If you like to change things up add:

  • 1 tablespoon organic Rose (rejuvenative)

  • 1 tsp ghee (rejuvenative)

  • 1/8 tsp organic cardamom (increases digestion) pinch of Pippali (prevents Kapha provocation) 1/2 tsp of sweetener (increases lactose digestion)

Indications: In Ayurvedic medicine, this sattvic beverage acts as a nervine that revives mental as well as physical energy. The advantage of fresh homemade almond milk over prepared boxed or bottled almond milk is that it has substantially more vitality and prana.

You can easily increase the proportions on this to make as much as you need. The fresher the better. Peeling almonds increases their digestibility. The smoothness of the resulting milk soothes Vata and Pitta. To calm Vata even more, add a pinch of salt.

(Easy variation: quick homemade almond milk: Boil the quart of water, pour over the almonds let soak for 15 minutes. Proceed as above)
